Shockwave Therapy (SWT)
Finally a non surgical, non invasive solution for many of us who suffer from painful Heel Spurs or other joint and tendon complaints with this relatively painless and very quick treatment process, that can see complete removal of pain in as little as 3 x 10 minute sessions! Shockwave Therapy provides patients a non-surgical alternative for when conventional treatment has not fully resolved their conditions. It is one of the newest and most effective treatments in rehabilitating chronic pain, and one patients have benefited greatly from.
What is Shockwave Therapy?
Shockwave treatment involves the application of short, frequent, and high intensity bursts of mechanical energy (in the form of a shockwave) into soft-tissue that is injured, scarred, or contains adhesions, is painful, or inflamed. This energy shock is not electrical, but rather a rapid high frequency vibration in the form of a Radial Pressure Wave (RPW).
When appropriately applied, shockwave can increase local blood flow, improve healing response, break apart scar tissue and adhesions, reduce muscle spasm, and directly decrease pain. Most patients tolerate the treatments well, and report only mild discomfort.
What should I expect with my Shockwave appointment?
We employ one of the highest grade Shock Wave Therapy devices, the Storz Shockwave MasterPuls Ultra MP100 to deliver treatment, which is the most widely used system for Radial Pressure Wave ECSW in practice.
The effects of Shockwave occur across several levels:
Cell Level Change – Shockwave stimulus breaks down the tissues at a cellular level, altering the chemical environment of the tissue. This initiates changes to free radicals which boost the release of substances that help prevent pain and inflammation.
Blood Flow Change – In order for a proper healing process to occur, normal blood flow is critical. Shockwaves initiate a revascularization effect by redirecting the new blood flow into the affected tissue. This type of stimulus improves soft tissue healing and regeneration.
Muscle Tone Reduction – Shockwave treatment reduces muscle contractions and can also disrupt patterns of neuro-cognitive pain which are commonly associated with chronic conditions. This effectively decreases muscle tone and spasm, as well as having specific benefits of eliminating trigger points.
Pain Reduction – Shockwave pulses directly affect the nerve fibres that transmit pain signals to our brain. Through the Gate Control Mechanism, shockwaves impact the interneurons in the A-β fibers which prevent the communication of pain.
While return to normal activities can be expected the following day, vigorous exercise and other activities should be limited for a period of four to six weeks. Patients with problems such as bleeding disorders, diabetes and similar issues may not be candidates for this procedure.
