Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

State of the art integrative Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy ( HBOT ) facility in
Clear Island Waters, Gold Coast.

COVID – 19 Update

We advocate our integrative care services for improving immune function. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy can be a great adjunctive treatment for Immune Modulation, as it enhances the efficiency of lung function by supplying the body with 1000x more oxygen than normal.

Please note: Our clinic is not a infection control medical facility and we can not treat COVID-19 patients without risking other patients. However we can provide preventive care to enhance lung function to individuals whom may be at risk.

What is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is the administration of 100% oxygen in a controlled environment that exerts up to three times normal atmospheric pressure. Under these conditions, larger amounts of oxygen are dissolved into the plasma and tissue, typically 10 to 15 times the usual amount. This dissolved oxygen can penetrate areas of the body which may have been receiving poor or restricted blood flow.

The increased oxygen levels in the tissue stimulate healing processes including the growth of new blood vessels (angiogenesis), the migration of white blood cells and the proliferation of fibroblasts, allowing the body to change the disease processes.

When is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) used?

The following list of 14 Indications are reimbursed by Government Funded Healthcare in the USA. In Australia the six indications as marked above are reimbursed by Medicare in Australian Hospitals only. **

  • Air or gas embolism **
  • Decompression sickness **
  • Necrotizing soft tissue infections **
  • Delayed radiation injury (soft tissue and bone necrosis) **
  • Diabetic Ulcers **
  • Enhancement of healing in selected problem wounds **
  • Carbon monoxide poisoning and CO poisoning complicated by cyanide poisoning
  • Clostridal myositis and myonecrosis, (gas gangrene)
  • Crush injury, compartment syndrome, and other acute traumatic ischemia
  • Exceptional blood loss (anemia)
  • Intracranial abscess, actinomycosis
  • Refractory osteomyelitis (Infected bone)
  • Skin grafts and flaps (compromised)
  • Thermal burns

HBOT Non-Medicare Covered Conditions

HBOT Non-Medicare covered conditions are classified as “off label”. These conditions are considered Investigational and are compiled from the International Hyperbaric Medical Foundation. It is generally understood that Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) does not directly treat these conditions but may target the physiological processes contributing to them.

Some of the “Off Label” generally accepted conditions are:

  • Auto Immune Diseases
  • Amputation Recovery
  • Cerebral Palsy
  • Closed Head Injury
  • Diabetic Conditions
  • Post Stroke/ Heart attack recovery
  • Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy
  • Spinal Cord Injury
  • Tick borne diseases
  • Traumatic Brain Injury
  • Migraine / Headaches
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Wound Care/Post-Surgical Healing

How do I get referred for treatment Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT )?

Even though many health practitioners recommend our services to their clients, you do not need a referral to have hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT ) treatment. Once you have decided that hyperbaric oxygen may assist your health condition, a consultation is scheduled for patient evaluation using criteria established by the American College of Hyperbaric Medicine and the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society. Our team works in concert with other clinicians caring for the patient so that hyperbaric oxygen treatments are coordinated with other therapies. Throughout the course of treatment, regular progress reports are sent to the patient’s other physicians, documenting the patient’s progress.

Are there any side effects?

Generally, patients do not experience side effects from HBOT. However, as with all medical treatments, some side effects may occur. These side effects are rare, but are discussed with patients prior to treatment. Some conditions require special precautions and a few conditions preclude treatment.
